I'm engaged
John 14
1"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I am going."
Last week I heard an interesting take on these verses. In Rob Bell's book, Sex God, he says that in Jewish culture during the time period, this is what a man would say to his fiance. He would ask her to marry him, but niether of them would know when. He would have to go back to his father's house and build onto the house so they would have a place to live when they were married. He would build until his father said stop and then go back and get his wife. The whole time the woman would be waiting and preparing for him but she had no idea when he might come.
I love the imagery Jesus uses. I love the thought of being his bride. We miss a lot of the meaning of scripture because we don't read it with Jewish eyes and minds. I tried to look for a commentary where they explained it and came up empty.
